A 1st U.S. Berdan's Sharpshooter was a highly trained marksman serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Organized in 1861 by Colonel Hiram Berdan, the regiment recruited skilled shooters who had to pass rigorous accuracy tests to qualify. Unlike standard infantry units, they wore distinctive dark green uniforms designed for concealment rather than the typical blue Union coat. Armed primarily with the Sharps breech-loading rifle, they were capable of rapid, precise fire at long range. Their duties included skirmishing, reconnaissance, and targeting enemy officers or artillery crews. Operating ahead of the main lines, Berdan's Sharpshooters earned a reputation for discipline, independence, and deadly effectiveness on battlefields such as Gettysburg and Yorktown.
