The AH-64D Apache Longbow flown by Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division played a decisive role during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a premier attack helicopter. Equipped with the AN/APG-78 Longbow fire control radar, advanced targeting sensors, and networked avionics, it could detect, classify, and engage multiple targets in all weather, day or night. Armed with a 30 mm M230 chain gun, Hellfire missiles, and Hydra rockets, the Apache delivered precise and overwhelming firepower in support of ground forces. Crews from C Co, 1-227 ARB conducted deep attack, armed reconnaissance, and close combat missions across Iraq's deserts and urban terrain. Its survivability systems and battle-proven design allowed it to operate in highly contested environments. The Apache Longbow became a symbol of 1st Cavalry Division air power, dominance, and relentless battlefield presence.
