In 1976, to mark the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Treasury Department issued redesigns of the quarter and $2 bill. The Bicentennial quarter features the dates "1776-1976" on the obverse below Washington's head, with the reverse features a colonial drummer, inspired by Archibald Willard's classic painting, "Spirit of '76," which was painted for the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1876. It was the first commemorative coin issued for circulation. The $2 bill, which had been out of print for several years, was reissued with a new reverse image depicting the signing of the Declaration of Independence, based on the painting by John Trumbull. Together, the coin and bank note create a spectacular tribute to American independence. The set comes in a handsome 2-sided display folio with a certificate of authenticity.
