The AV-8B Harrier II, operated by Marine Attack Squadron 231 (VMA-231), played a vital role in Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led mission to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. As a short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft, the Harrier II provided flexible, close air support from both amphibious assault ships and forward operating bases. Equipped with precision-guided munitions, a 25mm GAU-12 cannon, and advanced targeting systems, the AV-8B effectively engaged enemy positions, vehicles, and fortified structures. VMA-231, also known as the "Ace of Spades," deployed the Harrier in sustained strike missions to support coalition ground forces and disrupt enemy operations. Its ability to loiter, strike accurately, and operate in austere environments made it a key asset during the campaign. The AV-8B's performance during Operation Inherent Resolve underscored its importance in modern expeditionary warfare and the continuing relevance of Marine Corps aviation in complex combat environments.
