Commonly called the "Bone" because of its designation (B-One), the Lancer is a strategic bomber that was conceived during the 1960s with multiple delays until its ultimate introduction in 1986. Originally developed as a nuclear bomber, the B-1 was converted to conventional bombing use following the Gulf War. It is expected to remain in active U.S. service through the 2030s when the newly approved Long Range Strike Bomber is set to take its place.
