Answering the call for General Curtis LeMay's request for a "big bomber" shortly after World War II, the B-52 Stratofortress has since become a legend and remains in active service half a century after its 1955 introduction. The subsonic strategic bomber has the capability of carrying up to 70,000 pounds worth of weaponry and, though it has only dropped conventional bombs, it was built as a nuclear platform against the Soviets during the Cold War. More than 700 have been manufactured and today's modern upgrades will likely allow the warbird to remain in the Air Force's fleet through the 2040s.
