The Douglas C-47 Skytrain of the 79th Troop Carrier Squadron, 436th Troop Carrier Group, operated from USAAF Station AAF-466 at Membury, England, during the D-Day invasion in June 1944. On June 6, these aircraft played a vital role in Operation Neptune, dropping paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division behind enemy lines in Normandy. Powered by twin Pratt & Whitney engines, the C-47 was a dependable transport aircraft capable of carrying troops, cargo, or towing gliders. Painted with black-and-white invasion stripes for recognition, the 79th's C-47s braved flak and darkness to deliver the first wave of America's airborne assault on Fortress Europe.
