Springirth. A pictorial account of the last interurban electric railroad in America, Chicago's South Shore Line covers the line's history through rarely seen black and white images. The railroad was completed as the Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend Railway (CLS&SBR) in 1909, in order to connect South Bend, Indiana to Pullman, Illinois. Eventually, the route was rebuilt to provide direct passenger service to downtown Chicago, until it was forced into bankruptcy from the Great Depression. Yet again, the railroad revived in 1938 to handle more riders than ever during WWII. Learn of the famous railway that has overcome dramatic obstacles to maintain service over nearly a century in this image-rich title! 128 pages, 230 B&W photos, 8"x 11", softcover.
