During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers used bayonets as close-combat weapons attached to the muzzle of their rifles. Though often seen as symbols of fierce hand-to-hand fighting, bayonet charges were relatively rare. More commonly, bayonets served practical purposes like cooking or digging. However, the threat of a bayonet charge could intimidate enemies and break enemy lines. Confederate infantry trained in bayonet tactics, maintaining readiness for brutal close-quarters combat when ammunition ran low or battles intensified.
