In January of 1936, Edward VIII took the throne of the King of England. In December the same year, he abdicated the throne to marry the American divorcée Wallis Simpson. The news was not met well in Berlin, as Hitler believed that Edward and his wife were Nazi sympathizers, and hoped for non-participation, if not alliance, from Great Britain in his future global plans. Edward had reasons for viewing Germany kindly. His family was of German descent, with plenty of relatives living in the Third Reich. Also, Edward viewed Germany as a bulwark against the Soviets, whom he despised. This album commemorates this unusual relationship. It includes a medallion with Edward VIII's portrait, a silver 2 Reichsmark from Nazi Germany featuring the eagle and swastika, a half-penny from British West Africa, and a certificate of authenticity. 11"x 7".
