Originally designed as an air-superiority day fighter, the F-16 Fighting Falcon's versatility helped it evolve into a successful multirole, all-weather aircraft. Introduced with the U.S. Air Force in 1978, it featured an impressive assortment of innovative, pilot-friendly elements. Though it is no longer being purchased by the USAF, it remains in production for numerous international militaries; it has been used in 25 different countries. As of 2015, it is the second most common operational military aircraft in the world.
