The most advanced jet ever designed, the F-35 Lightning II was finally introduced in July 2015. Its multiple delays have been as much a source of consternation as its overrun program cost, which has now exceeded $1.5 trillion. Its three variants include the "A" (conventional takeoff and landing), the "B" (short takeoff and vertical landing), and the as-of-yet unintroduced "C" (carrier-based). The stealth warplane will perform multiple roles for the Air Force, Marines, and Navy — including ground attack, aerial reconnaissance, and air defense missions — and it is also being exported.
