About the F-35 Lightning II
Developed under the Joint Strike Fighter program to give the U.S. and NATO allies a fifth-generation, stealth-capable multirole fighter, the F-35 Lightning II is built in three variants: the conventional-runway F-35A, the short-takeoff/vertical-landing F-35B, and the carrier-based F-35C, distinguished by folding wingtips, a rear arrestor hook and reinforced landing gear for catapult launches from U.S. Navy carriers.
