The Northrop F-5 is a family of supersonic light fighter aircraft. It includes the original F-5A and F-5B Freedom Fighter variants, as well as the updated F-5E and F-5F Tiger II variants. Designed with compact, high-thrust General Electric J85 engines, the F-5 prioritizes performance and low maintenance costs. It's smaller and simpler than contemporaries like the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, making it popular for export. While primarily a day air superiority fighter, it's also capable of ground attack missions. Over 1,400 F-5E Tiger IIs were built before production ended in 1987
