First flown in February of 1946, the F-84 Thunderjet entered service with the U.S. Air Force the following year. It was, however, immediately plagued with performance problems and the entire program was nearly scrapped until the F-84D was introduced in 1949. It operated as the primary strike aircraft in Korea, completing more than 80,000 sorties and destroying more than 60% of all ground targets in the war. The F-84F swept-wing variant followed introduced in 1954.
