The F4U Corsair was a powerful American carrier-based fighter aircraft used during World War II, known for its distinctive inverted gull wings and formidable performance. Developed by Vought, the Corsair was fast, heavily armed, and rugged, capable of taking on both air and ground targets. With a top speed over 400 mph and six .50 caliber machine guns, it excelled in dogfights and close air support. Initially challenging to land on carriers, it was first deployed with the U.S. Marine Corps. The Corsair earned the nickname "Whistling Death" by the Japanese and became a key asset in the Pacific Theater.

Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington was a legendary U.S. Marine Corps fighter ace and Medal of Honor recipient during World War II. He commanded the famed "Black Sheep Squadron" (VMF-214), flying the F4U Corsair in the Pacific Theater. Known for his bold leadership and fearless flying, Boyington was credited with 28 aerial victories. His aggressive tactics and larger-than-life personality made him a celebrated and controversial figure. In 1944, he was shot down and held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese for over a year. After the war, Boyington became a national hero and wrote a memoir that inspired a popular TV series.
