Holding the distinction of having the longest production run of any U.S. piston-engine fighter (1942-1953), the F4U Corsair primarily saw service during WWII and the Korean War. More than 12,000 units were produced, and the aircraft was not officially retired until 1979. The "4" variant began its run in the U.S. Navy in 1944.
