Union troops in the Civil War were the military forces of the Northern states, fighting to preserve the United States and later to abolish slavery. The Union Army was made up of volunteers, conscripts, and eventually over 180,000 African American soldiers. Soldiers typically wore dark blue uniforms, with the standard issue being the sack coat—a simple, loose-fitting wool jacket with a straight cut and four brass buttons. The sack coat was practical and easy to produce, making it ideal for outfitting large numbers of troops. Union soldiers also wore kepis or forage caps, sky-blue trousers, and leather brogans. Their equipment included rifled muskets, cartridge boxes, and bayonets. Life for Union soldiers was harsh, with long marches, poor rations, and the constant threat of disease or combat. Led by generals like Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman, Union troops played a crucial role in defeating the Confederacy and ending slavery in America.
