James K. Polk (1795-1849) was the 11th president of the United States, serving from 1845 to 1849. A Democrat from Tennessee and protégé of Andrew Jackson, Polk was a strong advocate of Manifest Destiny—the belief that the U.S. was destined to expand across North America. During his single term, he achieved remarkable territorial growth, overseeing the annexation of Texas, the Oregon boundary settlement with Britain, and victory in the Mexican-American War, which added vast western lands including California and the Southwest. Polk also reformed the treasury system and reduced tariffs, strengthening the economy. Known for his intense work ethic and clear goals, he fulfilled all his major campaign promises. Exhausted by his presidency, Polk died only a few months after leaving office.
