John Tyler (1790-1862) was the 10th president of the United States, serving from 1841 to 1845. A Virginian and former vice president under William Henry Harrison, he became the first vice president to assume the presidency after a president's death, setting an important constitutional precedent. Originally a Whig, Tyler clashed with his party by vetoing key bills to reestablish a national bank, leading to his expulsion from the Whig Party. Despite political isolation, he achieved significant accomplishments, including the annexation of Texas in 1845 and promoting westward expansion. Tyler also strengthened foreign relations through treaties with China and Britain. Though controversial during his lifetime, he is remembered for defending presidential authority and shaping the office's role in constitutional succession.
