The M4 Sherman was the primary medium tank used by the United States and Allied forces during World War II. Introduced in 1942, it was valued for its mechanical reliability, ease of production, and adaptability. Powered by a variety of engines and typically armed with a 75mm or later a more powerful 76mm gun, the Sherman served in every major theater of the war. Though it was often outgunned and less armored than German tanks like the Panther or Tiger, its numbers, mobility, and support from combined arms tactics gave it a critical advantage. Variants included flamethrower tanks, tank destroyers, and recovery vehicles. Over 49,000 were produced, making it one of the most widely used tanks of the war and a lasting symbol of American industrial and military strength.
