Millard Fillmore (1800-1874) was the 13th president of the United States, serving from 1850 to 1853 after the death of President Zachary Taylor. Born in a log cabin in New York, Fillmore rose from humble beginnings to become a lawyer and politician. As president, he is best known for supporting the Compromise of 1850, a series of laws aimed at easing sectional tensions between North and South over slavery. The compromise temporarily preserved the Union but included the controversial Fugitive Slave Act, which angered many in the North. Fillmore promoted trade and expanded relations with Japan through Commodore Perry's expedition. Although he sought moderation and unity, his policies deepened divisions that foreshadowed the Civil War, leaving his legacy deeply mixed.
