About the book
The book examines Gen. Sir William Howe's campaign to capture New York, which gave the British their best opportunity to destroy the Continental Army. After assembling his forces on Staten Island, Howe divided the Continentals, defeated them on Long Island, and forced George Washington's army to retreat through Brooklyn Heights, across the East River to Manhattan, and eventually to Harlem Heights and White Plains, where the British won again. Howe allowed Washington to withdraw rather than pressing his advantage, preserving the Continental Army for the war-winning strategy that followed.
