The Spitfire, with all its numerous variants, was the most produced British aircraft of the entire war with more than 20,000 total units manufactured. By 1942, the Allies needed a fighter capable of competing with the Luftwaffe Fw 190, and previous iterations of the Spitfire were proving inadequate. The upgraded Mk. IX was introduced in that year — the second most produced Spitfire variant behind the Mk. V — and proved incredibly versatile.
