The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc, originally a high-performance, single-seat fighter of World War II, was occasionally modified to carry two pilots for training and familiarization purposes. These rare two-seat conversions were typically carried out post-war, with surplus Mk.IX airframes adapted by extending the fuselage and adding a second cockpit under a lengthened canopy. Dual controls were installed, allowing instruction and hands-on flying experience in one of history's most iconic aircraft. Though never used in combat in this configuration, the two-seat Mk.IXc retained much of the original's agility and speed, thanks to its powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin 61 engine. These aircraft proved invaluable for training new pilots or giving VIPs and officials a firsthand experience of Spitfire flight. Today, several two-seat Spitfires survive in civilian hands and are flown at airshows or used for passenger flights, preserving the legacy of this legendary fighter in a uniquely interactive way. This beautiful Spitfire is currently presented in the colours of Spitfire Mk.IX ML365, the personal aircraft of ace pilot Group Captain Peter Russell ‘Johnnie' Walker CBE, DFC and DSO.
