In 2021, the T-38 Talon was flown by the First Assignment Instructor Pilots (FAIPs) at the 87th Flying Training Squadron (FTS) at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas. The T-38, a supersonic jet trainer, played a critical role in preparing future U.S. Air Force pilots for advanced military aircraft. FAIPs, who are seasoned pilots, instruct new aviators in complex aerobatic maneuvers, instrument navigation, and high-performance flying. The 87th FTS is responsible for producing pilots for both fighter and bomber aircraft, with the T-38 serving as the final stage of primary flight training before pilots transition to operational units.
