After Japan's surprise invasion of Singapore in 1941, a small British battalion led by Lieutenant Colonel McLean, Major Campbell, Captain Gordon, and Lieutenant Tom Ridgen are captured and imprisoned in a camp in the Burmese jungle. Major Campbell begins an uprising soon after. Worn down by a long march through the woods, daily beatings, and a lack of food, the troops lose energy for a coup, and the scheme collapses. Captain Gordon copes with the camp's extreme conditions by forgiving his captors and seeking spiritual salvation. A split occurs within the camp between those who follow Campbell's efforts for physical freedom and those who follow Gordon's more transcendent pursues. 2hr. 6min.
