About Lyndon B. Johnson's naval service
Johnson, then a U.S. congressman, was commissioned a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve in 1940. Called to active duty in December 1941, he served briefly in the Pacific in 1942 as a congressional observer on a bomber mission, for which he was awarded the Silver Star, before President Roosevelt ordered members of Congress back to their legislative duties later that year. He remained in the Naval Reserve and was later promoted to commander.
