A U.S. Army Ranger at Pointe du Hoc on D-Day June 6 1944 faced one of World War II's most daring missions. Under heavy German fire the Rangers landed at the base of towering 100-foot cliffs and began their perilous climb using ropes ladders and grappling hooks. Waves crashed below as bullets and grenades rained down from above. Exhausted but determined they reached the top destroyed enemy artillery threatening Omaha and Utah Beaches and held their position against fierce counterattacks. Outnumbered and isolated the Rangers' courage grit and sacrifice at Pointe du Hoc became a lasting symbol of American heroism and resolve.
