The X-17 rocket was an American experimental three-stage solid-fuel missile developed by the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s to study high-speed reentry into Earth's atmosphere. Standing about 40 feet tall, it launched from Cape Canaveral and could reach speeds over Mach 14. Its primary mission was to simulate ballistic missile reentry conditions, testing materials and designs for heat resistance and aerodynamics. The X-17 featured a unique staging system that allowed it to accelerate rapidly in the upper atmosphere. It played a key role in early research that contributed to ICBM development and the advancement of space reentry technology.
