Vali is the name of a Norse god and the son of the god Odin. When the much beloved god Baldur was killed it was Vali who in turn slayed the assassin. The mere mortal seen here enters the fray in mid battle cry. Though not necessarily an articulate vocalization of a phrase or motto, its aim was to arouse the fighting spirit amongst your comrades while causing fear and intimidation in those on the opposing side. Use of a war cry was documented in the epic battles of Homer's the Iliad; the Huns of Central Asia were known to attack with whooping, terrifying cries; and Shakeseare has Marc Antony "Cry Havoc! let slip the dogs of war!" upon seeing the mutilated corpse his friend Julius Caesar.
