About Washington's Life Guard
Authorized in March 1776, the Commander-in-Chief's Guard protected General George Washington, along with the money and official papers of the Continental Army, throughout the American Revolutionary War. Washington directed that the unit be made up of "sober, intelligent, and reliable men," drawn deliberately from each of the 13 states, and it was disbanded in 1783 at the war's end.
