Washington's Guard, formally known as the Commander-in-Chief's Guard, was an elite unit formed during the American Revolutionary War to serve as General George Washington's personal bodyguard and to protect the headquarters of the Continental Army. Established on March 11, 1776, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Guard was made up of carefully selected soldiers from various colonies, chosen for their loyalty, discipline, physical fitness, and exemplary conduct.

The unit typically numbered around 180 men at its peak and was known for its distinctive appearance and strict standards. Members wore special uniforms that set them apart from the regular army, and they were trained to perform both ceremonial and combat duties. Their responsibilities included guarding Washington's person, securing important documents, and ensuring the safety of military funds and supplies.

Despite their prestigious status, the Guard faced moments of internal strife, including a notable plot in 1776 involving a few members conspiring against Washington — a plot that was quickly uncovered and dealt with.

Throughout the war, Washington's Guard symbolized unity, discipline, and the deep trust placed in a small group to protect the leader of the American cause for independence. They remained in service until the end of the war in 1783.
