A main battle tank first appearing in 1998, the ZTZ-98 was built by the Chinese in an attempt to emulate the powerful Soviet T-72 and T-80. The "99" series quickly followed, and, as of 2008, there have been more than 200 tanks manufactured in the "98" and "99" families. It remains in service with the Chinese Army today.
