About the Patent-Motorwagen
Karl Benz filed his patent for a "vehicle powered by a gas engine" on January 29, 1886 - patent number 37435, often called the birth certificate of the automobile. Unlike earlier experiments that simply added an engine to a horse-drawn carriage, Benz designed the three-wheeled Motorwagen's frame, engine, and steering together from the ground up. Roughly 25 were built between 1886 and 1893.
