About the A-10 Thunderbolt II
Built around a 30mm GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon, the A-10 was designed for close air support and tank-busting missions, with a heavily armored cockpit and twin turbofan engines mounted high on the rear fuselage for survivability over the battlefield. The 23rd Fighter Wing has flown the A-10 since the type entered Air Force service in the 1970s.
