The Douglas A-4D Skyhawk flown by VMA-242 "Bats" of the U.S. Marine Corps was a nimble, carrier-capable attack jet stationed at NAS Key West during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Designed for quick-response strike missions, the A-4D was compact yet powerful, capable of delivering conventional or nuclear ordnance. In October 1962, VMA-242 stood on high alert, ready to strike Soviet missile sites in Cuba if ordered. Painted in standard gull gray and white, with squadron bat insignia, the Skyhawks represented a critical component of America's tactical airpower during the standoff, combining speed, precision, and reliability in a time of extreme tension.
