After surviving a devastating deck explosion aboard the USS Forrestal that killed 134 people in July 1967, John Sidney McCain III joined the VA-163 "Saints" on the USS Oriskany in October 1967. Soon after, his A-4E Skyhawk was shot down over Vietnam and was taken as a prisoner-of-war for 5½" years. In 1981, McCain retired and became a congressman, then senator in 1986. Considered a national hero and noted statesman, he passed away in 2018 with a funeral usually reserved for U.S. Presidents and Supreme Court Justices.
