About the B-17F
The "F" variant marked a significant advancement over earlier B-17 models, with extended operational range, a substantial offensive bomb load and enhanced defensive armament of ten .50-caliber machine guns. Flight crews especially valued the B-17's ability to return to base despite sustaining heavy structural damage from enemy fire.
