About the B-52
First flown in 1955, the B-52 was conceived as a long-range nuclear bomber but has since served in varied roles, from conventional bombing missions in Vietnam to launching stand-off missiles during Operation Desert Storm. It continued flying combat and deterrence missions after the First Gulf War, including close air support sorties over Afghanistan in the early 2000s.
