About the Bf 109E-3 and Horst Perez
Perez, of German and Spanish descent, had previously served with the Legion Condor, the German volunteer unit that supported Franco's Nationalist forces during the Spanish Civil War, before flying this aircraft with 4./JG 26 during the Battle of Britain. The Bf 109E-3 was armed with two 7.92mm MG 17 machine guns and two 20mm MG FF/M cannons and, powered by a liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz engine capable of over 400 mph, formed the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force, with over 33,000 Bf 109s built in total.
