Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

Warren. Officially opened in 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel had been named one of the "Five Wonders of the Modern World" by Reader's Digest magazine. A culmination of decade-long efforts of local businessmen, the plan was to open up the remote Eastern Shore to the bustling Virginia mainland. The $200 million project ended up being a series of 17.6-mile-long bridges, tunnels, islands, and trestle located in the middle of Chesapeake Bay.
