A flagbearer in the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment carried the regiment's battle flag during the American Civil War serving as a vital point of direction communication and unit identity amid the confusion of combat. Because the flag drew intense enemy fire the role was exceptionally dangerous and many color bearers were killed or wounded while keeping the colors aloft. The 15th Alabama fought in major campaigns including the Battle of Gettysburg where it suffered heavy casualties. Although individual soldiers often displayed personal courage they fought in service of the Confederacy which sought to preserve a society based on slavery.
