About Civil War fife and drum corps
Drums carried orders across the noise of battle and camp, and a typical Civil War Fife and Drum Corps, usually attached to a regiment, included a drum major, fifers and drummers playing snare and bass drums, with corps ranging from as few as 7 or 8 musicians to as many as 20.
