About VF-124 and the F-14 Tomcat
VF-124 "Gunfighters" became the U.S. Pacific Fleet's F-14A Tomcat training squadron in 1972, based at NAS Miramar, California. The carrier-based F-14 combined variable-sweep wings with long-range AN/AWG-9 radar and AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, allowing it to track and engage multiple targets at long range while also handling close-in dogfights. Retired by the U.S. Navy in 2006, it remains an enduring symbol of American naval aviation.
