About the markings
The 494th Fighter Squadron flew F-111F Aardvarks from RAF Lakenheath in Operation El Dorado Canyon, the April 1986 airstrike on Libya. To mark the 40th anniversary of that mission, the squadron, now flying the F-15E Strike Eagle, applied a tribute paint scheme recalling the tan-and-green camouflage its F-111s wore on the raid.
About the F-15 Eagle
Developed by McDonnell Douglas and introduced in the early 1970s, the twin-engine F-15 was built for air superiority, and the F-15E Strike Eagle variant adds precision ground-attack capability alongside its air-to-air role. Powered by two Pratt & Whitney F100 engines capable of exceeding Mach 2.5, it continues to serve with the U.S. Air Force and allied nations.
