About the F-4 Phantom II and the Thunderbirds

The twin-engine, tandem-seat F-4 Phantom II was developed by McDonnell Aircraft in the 1960s and served the U.S. military and numerous allied air forces as a fighter, interceptor and attack aircraft, playing a prominent role in the Vietnam War. The Thunderbirds, the Air Force's official aerial demonstration squadron formed in 1953, flew the F-4E Phantom II from 1969 to 1973 before later transitioning to other aircraft.
