The F-94 Starfire was the United States Air Force's first operational all-weather jet interceptor, developed from the T-33 trainer during the early Cold War. Entering service in 1950, it was designed to defend North American airspace against Soviet bombers, day or night, in any weather. Powered by an afterburning Allison J33 turbojet, the Starfire could climb rapidly and intercept targets using onboard radar, a major step forward for its time. Early F-94A and B variants carried machine guns, while the later F-94C replaced them with unguided rockets mounted in the nose and wing pods. Though quickly outpaced by newer designs, the Starfire played a crucial transitional role in shaping modern interceptor tactics and technology, within early jet-era air defense doctrine and Cold War readiness worldwide.
