Receiving their first jet in 1951, VMF-224 "Bengals" initially flew the F2H Banshee before replacing it with an F9F-5 Panther which changed them into VMA-224. It wasn't until March 1993 when the squadron became VMFA (AW)-224, after they were given the F/A-18D Hornet to operate. In January 2009, they were based out of Iwakuni and then returned to MCAS Beaufort in July later that year.
