With the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942-53), the F4U Corsair was a legend in World War II and Korea. With an unbelievable 11:1 kill-to-loss ratio for the U.S. Navy during WWII, the aircraft was considered by the Japanese to be their most formidable enemy fighter. It was not retired until 1979.
